History of the World Sand Games™

Ruth N. Nelson had a vision and a concept 5 years ago of developing an event that would highlight athletes with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). She begin to look to the future in discussions with Michelle Furlong (NTR Coach & Referee); Annette Lynch (SONA) and when Nelson met Samantha Vogel (SOTX-Area 10), she knew she had the right person in SOTX to manage the event. Nelson then applied for a Fellowship with SOI. This concept and project was than presented later to a local venue for the 2013 event.
With all this in place, Nelson began talking with Marlene MaHaffey to really find a name worthy to assist in developing the “Big Picture”, a template for Unified Sand Volleyball within an event that would accommodate BYOP® (Bring Your Own Parent) and all other divisions from junior club to college to adult competition. Thus the World Sand Games were born. Nelson created a website for the 2013 Games Website to support this event .
